Rech, Prof. Dr. Bernd

Bernd Rech, born 1967, studied physics in Heidelberg and Aachen. In 1997 he received his PhD for his work on amorphous silicon solar cells at the RWTH Aachen. From 1996 to 2006 he was employed at the research center in Jülich leading the solar cell technology group, where he investigated innovative thin film silicon solar cells. In 2005, Prof. Rech was a guest at the Q-Cells AG in Thalheim, Germany. In 2006 he became director of the Institute for Silicon-Photovoltaics of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. Since 2007, he has also been a professor of photovoltaics at the TU Berlin. He is the spokesperson for the  program »Renewable Energies« of the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft as well as one of the initiators of the Competence Center for Thin Film and Nanotechnology in Photovoltaics Berlin (PVcomB) that is currently being constructed in Adlershof.

Bernd Rech’s institute aims at developing the fundaments and technology of highly efficient and inexpensive thin film solar cells. The focus lies on the semiconductor silicon. The main challenge is to produce very thin and at the same time high-quality silicon films with the aid of simple and fast deposition technologies, and creating overall efficient solar cells. To achieve this, the solar cell has to be designed as a light trap in order to convert as much of the incident sunlight as possible into electronic charge carriers. The illustration shows the microscopic cross-section of an evaporated and consecutively thermally crystallized silicon film. The zinc oxide layer constitutes the solar cell’s transparent front contact. The working group’s research ranges from basic materials research to the development of devices and prototypes – with the latter mostly being done in collaboration with PVcomB. Modern science-related keywords like self-organised growth, interface and defect engineering and the use of nanotechnology in order to obtain unprecedented functionality describe current research priorities.
