Sauer, Prof. Dr. Joachim

Joachim Sauer was born in 1949 in Hosena near Hoyerswerda, studied chemistry at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) where he received his doctorate in 1974. He initially focused on the semi-empirical study of aromatic radical ions before turning his attention towards non-empirical calculation methods – after research stays at Torun University, Poland, and the Heyrovsky Institute in Prague. His professorial dissertation on »Quantum Chemical Investigation of Active Centers and Adsorptive Interaction of Silicon Dioxide and Zeolite Surfaces« paved the way for a molecular understanding of these phenomena. From 1977-1991 he conducted his research at the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Adlershof. Only one year before the fall of the Iron Curtain did he receive permission to go on a research trip to Karlsruhe University in West Germany. From the mid 1990ies, on top of his responsibilities in Berlin, he worked for BIOSYM Technologies in San Diego on the development of modeling software in the framework of a Catalysis and Sorption Consortium, which helped him establish world-wide contacts. From 1992-1996 he joined the Quantum Chemistry Research Group of Max Planck Society (MPG) at HU. Since 1993 he has been a full professor for theoretical chemistry at HU. When his chemistry department was relocated to its present location in 2001, it was like »Adlershof revisited« for Sauer.

His research focus remained on solid catalysts. He developed quantum mechanical, molecular mechanical and other hybrid methods that come close to »chemical exactness« even in realistic models of complex structures. Experimental research within and outside his university has always been important for Sauer. Hence his commitment to Collaborative Research Center 546 »Transition Metal Aggregates«, whose spokesperson he has been since its foundation in 1999, and most recently to the Berlin Cluster of Excellence »Unifying Concepts in Catalysis«. Since 2006 he has been an external scientific member of the Fritz Haber Institute of MPG. (Photo: Peter Himsel)
